Welcome to the 17th International Winelands Conference hosted by the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University. This year’s conference is focused on "Re-imagining Public Servant Leadership in a post-capture, post-pandemic governance landscape."
The pandemic has brought to the forefront the importance of servant leadership in the public sector. It emphasizes putting others' needs first, and fostering a culture of service in organizations, ultimately leading to increased employee loyalty, productivity, and problem-solving. However, the past decade of state capture and governance failures in South Africa has resulted in a crisis of legitimacy for the government. This highlights the importance of servant leadership in the public sector more than ever.
Public servant leadership must change with the times to effectively address society's growing demands. It is a concept that must adapt to what the times and the public require. Therefore, public servant leaders must continuously re-imagine public servant leadership primarily through the lens of complexity, plurality, relationality, and ethics.
This conference aims to deepen the discussion of servant leadership by exploring the subthemes of accountability, performance management, governance, and novel ideas in public administration and governance. Through this conference, public service leaders can share their experiences and insights on how to reimagine public servant leadership in a post-capture, post-pandemic governance landscape.
Join us for insightful discussions, engaging workshops, and meaningful networking opportunities. Let’s reimagine public servant leadership together!
